3 DAY SUP DISCOVER COURSE 12 to 14 June 2023 10am -2pm

A 3-day course for those wanting to achieve their Discover Award. This course is open to Novice/Beginner paddlers or those with a little experience but not much formal instruction.

  • This is a 3-day course, see below for full details of what the course entails

  • Paddlecraft: STAND UP PADDLEBOARD (we supply the craft or you can bring your own)

  • The course takes place on The Royal Military Canal located between Hythe and Seabrook.

  • Minimum of 3 participants for the course to run.

  • Arrive 15 minutes before the session time to get kitted out (we provide all the equipment)

  • Please read our Social Distancing page, note that our changing rooms are currently closed

  • Paddlers will need to bring your own lunch and drinks

  • Certificate: £6, this is in addition to the course fee

DAY ONE : 10am-2pm (PPA Covers 'Start'+)

Safe lifting and carrying techniques

Set up of Board, personal dress and buoyancy options

Launching and embarking in different situations

Paddling positions and posture

Intro to forward strokes, changing sides & cross deck strokes

Intro to turning and corrective strokes

Moving sideways

Environmental & Access discussions

DAY TWO : 10am - 2pm

Ruddering and straight running

Forward paddling on one side techniques

Turning options 'on and off' side

Capsize, falling off and getting back on

Self rescue and rescue of others

Recovering a SUP to the bank

Basic safety equipment

Kit needed for a day out on the water

Waterproofing kit options

Packing an iSUP

DAY THREE: 10am - 2pm (PPA 'Discover')

Continued coaching of efficient forward paddling

Supportive strokes

Edging and Trim of the board for load & wind

Continued rescues and recovery of another paddler back to their board or bank

Towing another board (contact and releasable tows)

Leash options (ankle/waist quick release)

Intro to other safety kit

Where and when to paddle & helpful websites

There will also be conversations throughout on; Access, Environmental considerations,  Weather and Water websites, Paddleboard design etc.

Note: Our Centre is located on Prince’s Parade, and is in view of the seafront. If driving from Folkestone, turn left onto Prince’s Parade and Seapoint will be the second turning on your right, the car park is signposted. There is pay and display parking in the carpark adjacent to the centre, metred parking is also available on Prince’s Parade (free of charge over the Winter months, subject to change).
