25 AND 26 JULY 2022: OPEN CANOE 2 DAY DISCOVER COURSE

£130.00

This course is for those wanting to achieve their Discover Award. It is open to Novice/Beginner paddlers or those with a little experience but not much formal instruction.

2 days, 10am-5pm each day.

Certificate fee is additional £6, paid at the centre, should you pass the assessment.

  • This is a 2-day course, see below for full details of what the course entails

  • Paddlecraft: Open Canoe (we supply the craft or you can bring your own)

  • The course takes place on The Royal Military Canal located between Hythe and Seabrook.

  • Minimum of 3 participants for the course to run, maximum 6 participants.

  • Arrive 15 minutes before the session time to get kitted out (we provide all the equipment)

  • Please read our Social Distancing page, note that our changing rooms are currently closed

  • Paddlers will need to bring your own lunch and drinks

  • £6 fee for certificate at the end of the course, if you pass the assessment. This is in addition to your course fee.

DAY ONE : 10am-5pm (PPA Covers 'Start'+)

Safe lifting and carrying techniques

Set up of boat, personal dress and buoyancy options

Launching and embarking in different situations

Paddling posture

Intro to forward and backwards paddling and stopping 

Turning and corrective strokes

Ruddering and straight running 

Capsize, recovery and emptying

Self rescue and rescue of others

Recovering a canoe to the bank

Basic safety equipment

Securing a craft for transportation

Equipment for a day out and loading the canoe

DAY TWO 10am - 5pm (PPA 'Discover')

Continued coaching of efficient forward paddling

Support strokes to prevent capsize

Supportive turning strokes

Edging canoe to assist turning

Moving sideways

Continued rescues recovery of another paddler back to their craft

Rescues from the bank of a paddler

Day Trip carrying equipment for the day

Further Safety Equipment 

Where and when to paddle

There will also be conversations throughout on; Access, Environmental considerations,  Weather and Water websites, Paddlecraft design etc.

Note: Our Centre is located on Prince’s Parade, and is in view of the seafront. If driving from Folkestone, turn left onto Prince’s Parade and Seapoint will be the second turning on your right, the car park is signposted. There is pay and display parking in the carpark adjacent to the centre, metred parking is also available on Prince’s Parade (free of charge over the Winter months, subject to change).
